Developmental Editing

A developmental edit is an examination of all the elements of your writing, from word choices to overall structure. It can address plot, characterization, subtext, description, pacing, dialog, point-of-view, showing versus telling, and more. A developmental edit can lead to delighted praise or extensive red mark-ups throughout your manuscript, but our goal is always to help you write your best book yet.
Developmental editing does not normally include copyediting. Looking at line level grammar and punctuation issues can be a waste of time if the author is likely to continue working on the manuscript. Note: We may choose to provide copyediting if no major developmental concerns are identified.

If your manuscript is complete, but needs a fresh look, an editorial assessment can be a valuable tool. We will read your manuscript with an eye toward story structure, characterization, plot, pacing, tone, and how well the novel works within the context of its genre. Charlee or Priscilla will return an editorial letter to let you know what is working well, identify any areas of concern, and provide insight to help you make your book as strong as possible. Assessments can vary greatly depending on the manuscript. Expect anything from targeted comments to significant overarching concerns that might prompt changes to the manuscript. However, it is up to you to decide how you address our assessment. Please understand that this service does not include in-line comments; it includes an editorial letter and call only.
